Celebrating Failure

I am currently taking INR2001 (intro to international relations) and if you don't study or pay attention in lecture, it can be quite a difficult class. I've been doing pretty well so far, but I totally messed up on the last exam. Instead of using that last night to study (the night before the exam), I decided to go out with some friends. I'm a junior and a lot of my friends are seniors who are graduating, so I'm trying to spend as much time with them as possible before they leave. I ended up getting a D+ on the exam, which honestly was better than I thought I did. Even though it technically wasn't a failing grade, it still was a bummer because I knew better going into it.

School should always come first. Now I have to get a higher grade on the last exam to get an A, which makes it overall more challenging for me. I learned my lesson- no going out the night before a test. You would think I would've done this as a freshman, but nope- learning this lesson as a rising senior, ha.

Failure is definitely hard but it doesn't define anyone. I'm a communications major, and employers don't care as much about GPA as they do experience, so I don't beat myself up too much when I receive a bad grade every once in a while. It happens to everyone, there is SO much worse that can happen. You just have to shrug it off and can't sweat the small stuff.

I think it's extremely hard to fail this class unless you just aren't submitting assignments/ declaring your points. I don't know if it has sculpted my thoughts on taking more risks, but it keeps my head in line and on schedule with all of the assignments and organization.

  1. School is hard... balancing it with work and a social life is even harder. For example I am going to work tonight when I should be at home studying for my exam tomorrow... but Life is life and I must work to eat. As long as you do your best on the next exam and push yourself to be your best I think you should do great! 2. Hi Shannon, I've been in that position where all my friends are going out and I want to too but I have a paper due or an exam the next day and it can be quite tempting. I'm glad you learned from your experience though. Even if you think you've studied enough I don't suggest going out the night before an exam because you then feel terrible the next day since you might've gotten less sleep than you should've. Good luck on your next exam! Here's the link to my fail http://carolinalafuent3003.blogspot.com/2016/04/celebrating-failure.html

  3. Hi Shannon,
Well, I think we all have stories like yours. It can be really hard to put school first when life is happening all around you. I have had a few grades I regret too. I think it is really difficult for people to remember not to sweat the small stuff. I find myself sweating the small stuff all the time and then having to talk myself down. I think you have a great outlook and perspective on failure which will do you wonders in your future.
