What's Next

For those of you first time visitors, the idea I have come up with is that of the Variety Van- a food truck to be set up behind midtown that essentially sells cheap yet healthy food for late-night goers. My targeted market is mostly college students who have had themselves a night out or are possibly taking a break from studying at the library and are in need of a snack.

Existing Market

What's Next
Solely relying on my Amazon Whisperer experience, I think since I am creating a food truck service, it is important what products are in my kitchen. I thought of an idea for some sort of super blender, that can be used to craft concoctions that are hard to make with the basic power of your average blender, all while making the perfect gluten-free smoothie (or whatever anyone else is craving). Other appliances would have the same "super" features like an electric 4 part stove-top, an oven, or a mega fridge/ freezer for storage purposes.

Customer Interviews
I interviewed 3 college students. I asked for insight on what we should be doing that we aren't planning to do. I inquired for any ideas they think customers might want next.

Path for the Future
I like these ideas of healthy desserts and promotions in order to get the word out there. I think it's important to market and brand well before the opening of a business and these customers' hit the nail on the head.
I also really appreciate the suggestion box as my variety aspect is going to change each week (the type of cuisine) and I want to cater to the customers' wants and cravings.
Lastly, the last interviewee mentioned buy 1 get 1 free deals and I think this is an excellent idea. I want the customers to feel like they're getting a bang for their buck and I think deals like this will keep them coming back for more. It also goes along with my theme of cheaper, yet great quality food.

New Market

Different Market
My "radically different" market would be that of adults. Since my food truck's target audience is that of college students, I figured why not shoot for the middle-aged or elderly, as it would be a harder niche considering people in these age ranges don't go out as much. I consider this to be the opposite of college students.

How the Venture Concept May Create Value
First of all, I think everyone (for the most part) tries to maintain a budget, so this factor applies to people of all ages. I think there are definitely some people out there who try to keep up with the trends and fads of today, and since food trucks are trending, the idea is appealing and attractive. I think anyone finds good quality, healthy, and cheap food valuable.

Customer Interviews
I interviewed 3 adults and again, they did not want to be videotaped. I asked how they think my business might be helped to meet customers like them and suggestions to products/ services we could provide.

Reflection
I think people this age are just really simple- they like easy and simplicity. Forms of promotion were popular among all 3 interviewees- which makes sense because how else are you supposed to get the word out there?
If I learned anything, at least from the first person, they suggested "good old fashioned" American food which is ironic to me because it seems sort of stereotypical. It surprised me how quick they were to answer- they know what they want.
I didn't really have any assumptions/ expectations but like I said, I was intrigued by the standard American food thing, which seemed stereotypical, in my opinion.
I don't think the new market is as attractive as the younger generation, solely because I plan to operate my business from 10pm-4am however I think I could change this if I maybe opted to open on weekends during the day as well. Overall, I think it went better than I expected.

  1. Shannon,

I definitely agree with you that your venture is best suited for a younger, college-aged target audience, especially because of your intended hours of operation. I also like the ideas for healthy desserts, a suggestion box, and BOGO deals. Nice work!

Unfortunately, I did not complete this assignment so I am unable to share my post with you.

  2. Hi Shannon,

You definitely seemed to have identified your target market! I think this is a well thought and great business concept. Food and the convenience of it is an extremely luctrative industry. I also thought Jacob made a good point by suggesting that you visit schools on a rotating basis to other food truck school lunch. I can see this catching on especially with the college students. 3. I think the “good old fashioned American food” comment was surprising as well. I guess that happens when trying to expand new markets. I think this may be telling you that when you expect to have a higher than average number of this new market, such as during family weekend or football games, you may want to use “classic American-inspired” menus but still keeping with the theme of healthy, cheap food. I wasn’t able to do this assignment, but you can see my blog here: http://brientrep.blogspot.com
