10 world problems (in no specific order):
1. Terrorism. Terrorism can be foreign or domestic- it is the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. A lot of global terrorism is very violent, such as the Syrian refugee crisis.
A practical solution could be to be as accepting as possible and [as the United States] definitely let in the refugees.
2. Poverty. In my international relations course, I learned that 4/5th of the world's population has only 1/5th of its wealth. These countries are third world countries.
A practical solution could be to donate as much money possible as much as possible. I also think it is important to teach and educate these people.
3. World hunger. This is a result of poverty. Due to lack of funds and resources, it is hard to feed everyone sufficiently in third world countries. Clean water is also scarce.
A practical solution could be to donate money and food. I have also seen water pumps that take the evaporation from the air and turn it into filtered drinking water.
4. Disease. This is a result of both poverty and world hunger. It is hard to fight off disease when you are not in good health in the first place, i.e. getting any nutritional value. HIV/AIDS is an example of a huge epidemic, especially in Africa.
A practical solution could be to treat these people if you have a medical background. There are many different mission trips to take part in, or programs such as Doctors with Borders.
5. Lack of education. This is another result of poverty. Without proper education in third world countries, people are unaware of how to get out of debt, or better themselves.
A practical solution could be to go over and teach. Once the ball is rolling and people are educated, they too will grow up and teach the younger generations. Education is the key to almost any world problem.
6. Lack of respect for cultural beliefs and values of others. This is commonly associated with religion and politics. It divides and separates us as human beings, leading to ignorance and hatred.
A practical solution could be to be more accepting of others and to try to get other to as well. If it's that hard, then people need to learn to keep nasty opinions to themselves. There's a certain grace to presenting a differing argument, and many people need to be taught how to do it.
7. Racial inequality. There are still many prejudiced people around the world, especially in the United States. It seems almost everyday there is an issue about race or ethnicity, such as the all-white Oscars debacle currently trending throughout social media.
A practical solution could be to stop drawing attention to the unnecessary. While I believe it is an important issue, I think sometimes people get carried away and look too much into petty things that takes away from the real problem. We need to be taught respect at an early age.
8. Gender inequality. Feminism is a world that scares many people away but what it actually means is the political, social, and economic equality of ALL GENDERS. Women are looked down upon by many in today's society globally.
A practical solution could be to keep advocating for rights. The fact that it is 2016 and women are STILL being paid less than men really angers me.
9. Mental health. I believe mental health issues feed into terrorism. Throughout the world, people are brainwashed into believing that their beliefs are the most important and correct ones, which can lead to acts such as 9/11, the Syrian refugee crisis, and mass shootings.
A practical solution could be for governments to put more money into health care, especially the United States.
10. Donald Trump. I know this seems like a silly issue, let alone one that pertains to the United States alone, but despite his agenda, Trump is paralleling Adolf Hitler. It might sound dramatic, but much of his platform advocates for the exact opposite of some items on my list and if he became president, it would definitely turn into a global problem.
A practical solution could be to ignore him and NOT vote for him!!!
The picture below is of Emma Watson giving her gender equality speech at the UN. While I think there are more pressing issues than gender equality, I do believe it is really important and it resonates with me as a young woman. If you haven't seen this awesome speech, check it out here.

Hello Shannon! I really enjoyed your post and I think you have a lot of good ideas. I see that some of our problems are the same so I think you have a good idea of the issues in the world today. I especially liked one of your problems being Donald Trump. Although I do think their are bigger problems I found this funny and do think he is an actual issue to our country. If you have some time go ahead and check out my blog! http://biglilcut.blogspot.com/2016/01/worlds-biggest-problems.html
ReplyDeleteHello Shannon. I think that you touched on some valid points in your blog. Specifically number 6 in your post related to me. I also feel that people seem to have a huge problem accepting other people's opinions. In this day in age, it appears everyone must be politically correct except for yourself. At least, that is the way the mindset seems to be to me. The amount of times in the news I see that people are offended by something that does not effect them in any way at all is breath taking. I also found your Trump association very true. It is crazy how this election is unfolding and I am worried for the sake of the United States.
