Identifying Local Opportunities

5 local opportunities I received from the Gainesville Sun:

Rally to Protect Paine's Prairie
http://fieldguide.blogs.gainesville.com/755/rally-to-protect-paynes-prairie/?tc=ar
This article is about how Gov. Rick Scott is trying to cut state funding when it comes to Florida's State Parks. On Saturday, many local folks met downtown to protest Scott's actions, because Paine's Prairie is so near and dear to their hearts. In this article, I believe it is Gov. Scott's problem because it is his job to keep the people happy and do what is best for them.

Driver Unhappy with Synching of Traffic Lights
http://www.gainesville.com/article/20160124/ARTICLES/160129827/1182?Title=Driver-unhappy-with-synching-of-traffic-lights
This article is about certain traffic lights in Gainesville that are up for inspection, Michelle Cohan brought the issue of these traffic lights to Gainesville Traffic Operations Manager, Emmanuel posadas. Several lights at NW 16th Boulevard, 34th, and 43rd streets cause much congestion during rush hour, as the lights only stay green long enough for about 8-10 cars to get through, creating a substantial backup. While Cohen is upset with the problem, as are many more people in Gainesville, it is essentially Posadas's job to check the lights and filter out the traffic.

Lowe's Manager Bret Dameron Leads Move to New Digs
http://www.gainesville.com/article/20160124/ARTICLES/160129923?tc=cr
This article is about Bret Dameron and his ability to reform the Lowe's on Archer. Within months, he has prepared to relocate himself to the new Lowe's as he and his crew have worked 12-hour days since being handed this responsibility. They had a timeline of 2 months to fill the new store with racks, displays, and products while still running another store in Alachua county. The problem here and job to get done is Dameron's and his team.

Proposal Would Allow City School Districts
http://www.gainesville.com/article/20160123/ARTICLES/160129850/1002/news01?Title=Proposal-would-allow-city-school-districts&tc=ar
This article is about a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow cities to form their own school districts. The proposal would also allow existing city/ county governing bodies to serve as a school boards and would get rid of a requirement that school board elections be nonpartisan. With the proposal would come a series of questions about the financing of schools and plain logistics- making this the government's problem.

Blaze Destroys Monteocha Family's Home
http://www.gainesville.com/article/20160122/ARTICLES/160129872/1002/news01?Title=Blaze-destroys-Monteocha-family-s-home&tc=ar
A mobile home that belonged to the Monteocha family was destroyed in a fire and an investigation is taking place by state fire marshals. While the likelihood of foul play is low, there is still question as to why this fire got so out of hand. The Monteocha's must face the problem of finding a new palce to live- as their grandfather left them the place when he passed back in February of 2013.

  1. I really enjoyed reading about the articles you chose. I especially feel for the first one about Paynes Prairie. I think it should still receive funding not only because it's an important nature preserve, but also because it's such a popular place to visit in Gainesville. I also agree the the traffic in Gainesville caused by poorly functioning traffic lights is a huge and very frustrating problem.
